The Belfort, the central landmark of the city,
next to the Markt, the cobbled square that is the heart of Brugge.

The
weekend trip enjoyed by some Choral Society members after the May 2007 concert was to
Brugge in Belgium (or Bruges as it seems to be known everywhere outside the city
itself!). Eurostar provided a rapid journey to Brussels and a local train onwards to
Brugge. Here, outside the station, the easy journey seemed to end, with no taxis to
the city centre where the hotel was. Some decided to walk - a pleasant enough
journey through cobbled streets, with only an occasional protest from wheeled suitcases,
while those who would have taken a taxi soon found a bus journey ending close to the hotel
by the main square.
Brugge is an ideal place for a short tourist visit.
It is flat, small enough to walk or cycle through, quiet - access by cars to the centre
seems to have been fairly effectively discouraged - and crammed full of beautifully
preserved mediæval buildings. The city is intersected by a network of canals, and
a boat trip is an ideal way of seeing a continuously varying panorama of historical
sights. |
